  • - 2 tbsp Oyster Sauce or use 1.5 tbsp Hoisin
  • - 1 tbsp Chinese cooking wine or Mirin, dry sherry, sake, or rice wine
  • - 2 1/2 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • - 2 tsp granulated sugar
  • - 1/2 tsp sesame oil
  • - 1/4 tsp white pepper black pepper works too!

- Stir Fry:

  • - 1 tbsp cooking oil vegetable or peanut oil works well
  • - 2 cloves garlic finely minced
  • - 1 small onion finely diced
  • - 500 g 1 lb ground beef (a lean variety such as 80/20)
  • - 1/2 cup thinly sliced scallions green onions, with extra for serving
  • - 1/2 cup diced bell peppers for added crunch and sweetness

- Garnishes:

  • - Sesame seeds to sprinkle on top

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Sauce

  • Start by mixing all the sauce ingredients together in a medium bowl. Stir hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, Chinese rice wine, dark soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, and white pepper until well combined. This is the base layer of flavor that will enhance your beef. Set it aside for now.

Step 2: Get the Skillet Ready

  • Heat a large skillet over high heat and add the tablespoon of cooking oil. Opt for oils like vegetable or peanut, as they can withstand high temperatures. Once the oil is glistening, toss in the minced garlic and diced onion. Stir quickly to avoid burning, cooking them for about a minute or so until the onions start to turn golden brown.

Step 3: Cook the Ground Beef

  • Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart as you go. You want to ensure it crumbles nicely for even cooking. Stir the beef frequently for about 5-7 minutes, or until you no longer see any pink. At this point, the savory aroma of cooked beef should start filling your kitchen!

Step 4: Incorporate the Sauce

  • Now, it’s time to pour in the prepared sauce. Make sure to scrape the bottom of the skillet, letting all those flavorful bits mix in. Allow the mixture to cook for another 2 minutes, stirring gently. If the sauce appears thick, you can add a splash of water to help it steam and deepen the flavor without overcooking.

Step 5: Add the Garnishes

  • Finally, stir in the sliced scallions and diced bell peppers, cooking for an additional minute just until the veggies are slightly tender. Remove from heat, and your dish is ready to be served!

Notes

- Quality Ingredients Matter: Use fresh ingredients, particularly the sauces. A good soy sauce will make all the difference.
- Don’t Skip the Seafood: If you have it, toss in a handful of shrimp along with the beef for added texture and flavor.
- Customize with Vegetables: Capers, broccoli, or snap peas can be great additions.
- Cook to Your Taste: Adjust the cooking time as per your preference for beef doneness.
- Meal Prep Friendly: This dish stores well—ideal for meal prep enthusiasts!
